Justin’s interest in GIS stems from his service in the U.S. Navy where he was stationed onboard the USS Key West (SSN 722) as a Navigation Electronics Technician. During his five year enlistment, Justin prepared paper and digital charts for domestic and international operations, maintained the boat’s position while underway, and served as the boat’s Charts and Publications Custodian: a position that required management of over 3,000 coastal, open ocean, and bottom contour navigation charts with classifications ranging from unclassified to Top Secret. Justin was a fully qualified Quartermaster and operated and maintained various Navigation equipment including, civilian and military radar, submarine fathometer, Voyage Management System, Ring Laser Gyro Navigator, and military and commercial GPS. He was awarded two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals (2005, 2006) and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Navy Expeditionary Medals in 2003. Justin received an Honorable Discharge in September, 2006. |
